Shine, the national charity which represents people with spina bifida has welcomed news from from the Institute of Child Health (ICH) that tests on mice have indicated that a new supplement might further prevent spina bifida.
Official data from the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (Eurocat) shows there were 390 live births in the UK and Ireland of babies with neural tube defects between 2007 and 2011.
Women are already urged to take folic acid during the first three months of pregnancy to reduce the neural tube defects (NTDs) that lead to spina bifida. See www.gofolic.co.uk
