Collaboration between Shine + industry associations prompts favourable opinion from European Food Safety Authority @wannabewell

European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a favourable opinion on the use of supplemental folate to reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTD) such as spina bifida and anencephaly. This is consistent with current advice from the UK Department of Health.


Current advice from the Department of Health is that all women who could become pregnant should take 400 micrograms of supplemental folic acid prior to conception, and then for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.


Authorisation of this disease risk reduction claim in the EU will mean that information can be included on the packs of food supplements, and in other commercial communications, which will maximise the message to consumers.
